HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTANCY The Department of Accountancy is under the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences (FSMS), Yobe State University, (YSU), Nigeria. From its inception, the Department was destined to play a significant role in accounting education in its catchments area in particular, and in Nigeria as a whole. The pioneers fashioned the programme in such a way that it is professionally oriented and interdisciplinary in nature as such it provides the students with the appropriate and relevant accounting knowledge that stands the test of time. The Department enjoys the active participation of some very hardworking academics from departments of Business Administration, Economics, Public administration and the faculty of Law, who facilitate some specialized course units in its programmes. Currently the department has two hundred and fifty (259) students consisting of part one to four who are engaged in both theoretical and practical learning process. The few number of students give the department a better management for mutual understanding and conducive learning atmosphere. The department has graduated six sets of students.
PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMME To produce high level accounting personnel that can contribute to the development of accounting practice.
MISSION Develop effective and professional Accountants by providing quality accounting education and training, and disseminating scholarly research in theory and practice for the benefit of the University and greater community. VISION The Department has the vision to be recognized as a ground-breaking leader in both theoretical and professional education and to become one of the main centers for the provision of accounting education in Nigeria and beyond.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME Consistent with the philosophy and vision above, the department has the following as its objectives: - 1. provide basic knowledge and skills needed for the understanding and analysis of problems related to the management and administration of industrial, commercial, public and other human organizations; 2. equip students with knowledge and skills of decision making; especially the analytical skills needed for recognizing, defining and solving problems; and 3. develop in students, leadership and interpersonal relations skills in management.
